Founded in 1948 in Louvain (Belgium), as a confessional organization, the International Society of Sociology of Religions (SISR) has rebuilt itself as a scientific organization in order to understand the relationship between religion and society. Every two years, it holds bilingual conferences (French and English). Among the more than 500 members from all continents are some of the world's leading religious authorities. It congregates sociologists for the most part, but there has been growing participation of scholars with backgrounds in the disciplines of anthropology, political science and women's studies. Its members are from universities, confessional research centers and independent research institutes.
